Welcome to the Songwriters on Process podcast page! Since 2010, I’ve interviewed over 400 songwriters about, well, their songwriting process. My goal is to treat songwriters the same way we treat poets and more traditional prose writers: as writers, plain and simple. We go deep into the writing process on the podcast. Really deep.
I’ve never written a song in my life. I have a PhD in English language and Literature, and I’m a former academic. (Here's what I do now.) As a prose writer, I like to talk about writing, so these are intelligent conversations about writing between writers. And that means we also talk books. Speaking of books, in 2024 I published Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir by Mark Morton with Ben Opipari (Hachette Books). Mark is a guitarist in Lamb of God and a good friend. I'm biased, but it's a damn good book.
The Songwriters on Process podcast features interviews across many genres. You’ll find a couple of A-list actors on the site and several members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame too. There are icons who changed the course of music history and songwriters who are just starting out. The site has only been a podcast since 2022; before then, all interviews were in written form, which you can find here.
